Introduction:
The Community Foundation is working with the Media Trust and “communities and local government” to make Big Society a reality. Our approach is pragmatic: setting up a community group is the easy part; the trick is to sustain it. To do that you need commitment from grassroots up, true partnership working and predictable income. That’s where NEMUS comes in.
What is NEMUS? BIG Society/Local Action
NEMUS shows you how to help yourself, to take a project from dependence to self-sustainability (product summaries are linked to this page). With a small, once-only initial investment, we can create vibrant, self sustaining local communities. NEMUS offers:
A digital window onto communities of place or interest
High visibility, multi media messages
- A way to lever in partners and financial support
- A route to sustainability through practical products
- A method of inspiring communities into civic action
- An opportunity to pass on transferable skills across communities
BIG Society/Local Action philosophy:
Our partners and stakeholders endorse our philosophy:
small grants can make a big difference at grassroots level
there is a role for contractual delivery of public services, but our main aim is to grant aid and facilitate volunteer-led activity at local level
Local Action can be optimised through practical partnership working with the banks, local authorities and the Charity Commissioners.
